National Custom Home Builder of the Year | NAHB

Wilmington, NC – May 2021 – The North Carolina-based luxury design + build firm, Tongue & Groove, was named Custom Home Builder of the Year by the National Association of Home Builders. The NAHB’s members construct about 80% of the new homes built in the United States, both single-family and multifamily.

Mark Batson, founder and CEO of Tongue & Groove Design + Build, accepted the prestigious award during this month’s virtual International Builders Show. Mark Batson is also the owner of the Mark Batson Group affiliated with Landmark Sotheby's International Realty.

“We’re from the small NC town of Wilmington, and out of 140,000 members nationwide, we have been honored as the recipient for the Custom Home Builder of the Year award. Wow! We are so proud. Collectively, we desire to be the best, and this recognition is validation that we’re doing the right thing. Our mission and beliefs have been our simple guide, and by following them, we will continue to design and build more beautiful luxury homes. My award-winning team is even more motivated to make their mark on the custom home building industry.” said Mark Batson.

The company is committed to working with clients from project inception to completion and well beyond. Tongue & Groove introduces clients to a process that is smooth and transparent – functioning as a single-source solution for the design and build services. From world-class home design and 3D renderings to interior design, real estate capabilities, and self-performed construction labor, our team promises to provide our clients with an enjoyable home-building journey.

Tongue & Groove builds between 4 to 5 multi-million dollar homes a year and completes 2 to 4 significant renovations.

“The key difference that sets us apart from other custom home builders is our design-build process. We work collaboratively through the design and building process, allowing us to operate as a full-service business truly. Typically, an architect designs a floorplan and construction drawings alone – leaving gaps where other factors should be considered, such as the price per square foot of the finishing selections. When the stages of design and construction can be communicated together, and in alignment, efficiency, and quality go up. In contrast, the cost goes down.” said Stephanie Schauer, Operations Manager of Tongue & Groove Design + Build.

Currently, Tongue & Groove is building in several of Wilmington, North Carolina’s most beautiful waterfront neighborhoods, including Wrightsville Beach, Figure Eight Island, Landfall Country Club, and Kure Beach.
